Birchwood Update week Commencing 16/4/18

Please support us by providing your feedback on Parent View

We are always delighted to get your opinions on school and we always try to respond wherever we can. Your feedback was very positive at our recent Year 7 parents’ evening.

  • 98% of you agree “My child is happy at this school”

  • 99% of you agree “Staff expect my child/children to work hard and do their best”

  • 97% of you agree “My child makes good progress at this school”

  • 97% of you agree “My child is well looked after at this school”

  • For the rest of the feedback from the Year 7 parents’ evening please click here and select 'Parent Feedback' and the feedback that you would like to view.

We are asking your help to give your views about our school on OFSTED’s Parent View website. Right now, only 48 parents and carers have given their feedback on Parent View. We do not believe the views on Parent View are an accurate reflection of what you are telling us day-to-day and at events like parents’ evenings.

All you need to do is log on here then click on “Give your views” on the top tab and register. It will take about 10 minutes of your time but it will support us to give an accurate picture of our school at our next OFSTED visit and will also allow us to see more of your feedback.

Thank you for your support.

Keeping your child safe

Did you know you can text the British Transport Police on 61016 to tell them about non-emergency incidents when you are on a train? They also provide advice about preparing children and young people for travelling alone which you can find here.

England call up for Joe in 10SO

We are excited to announce that Joe from 10SO who plays for Burnley FC has received a call up to attend a 4-day England training camp at St George’s Park at the end of April.

Joe is one of four goalkeepers from across the country invited to try to win a place in the England under 15 squad who will take part in a tournament in Italy in early June. Over the course of ten days, teams from England, Italy, Russia and the USA will compete in the tournament.

Joe is only the second person from his age group to be called up from Burnley FC. He was delighted when he heard the news, and is confident that he will go through to the Italian games. Joe said,

“When I received the news, I was excited that my career path was on course and rather than feeling nervous, I felt excited to take part.”

In preparation for his break, Joe spent every day over the Easter holidays travelling to Burnley to train to be the best!

We would like to wish Joe the best of luck in the training camp.

Are you an electrical whizz?

Our Performing Arts department are looking for some help with a faulty power input on an electric piano. If you know about electric pianos or are an electrical whizz please get in touch if you think you can help. Please email contactus@birchwoodhigh.org. Thank you.

Non-uniform day Friday 20 April

We are holding a non-uniform day on Friday 20 April to support our bid to replace our 3G pitch. We are in the advanced stages of planning and we are confident the new state of the art pitch will be up and running by November this year. We need your support to make it happen. Learners wishing to come to school out of uniform on Friday should bring £1 to school.

This is not a ‘fancy dress’ day so onesies and novelty wear are not acceptable. In addition, clothing should be appropriate to a school day so clothing such as bare midriff tops, very short skirts or shoes with heels that could be a danger, should not be worn.

Thank you in anticipation for your support

Eleanor sings her way to success

Congratulations to Eleanor Jones in year 11 who has passed her Grade 6 singing exam and achieved a Distinction. Mrs Hajigeorgiou, her singing and piano teacher said, “This is a great achievement and I’m really proud of her.”

Together we can succeed; success stories from last year’s exam results.

This week’s star is last year’s Head Girl Fiona Baxter. Fiona joined us from Woolston C of E Primary and shone from day one. She was an extraordinary Head Girl carrying out her duties with confidence and pride. Fiona attended regular revision sessions and attained some fantastic results with two grade 9s and a grade 7 in English and maths and 7A*- B in her other subjects, including a A* in both music and RE. With such a great set of results and a positive work ethic, we are sure that Fiona will succeed in the future!

We would like to hear your views about our school so we can share these with OFSTED

We are asking for your support so that we are aware of your views about our school. It will also help us to prepare for our next OFSTED visit which is due this academic year. Thank you to all parents and carers who have already filled the online form in. We have had 18 responses so far and all parents have said that their children feel safe and happy at school. We would love more views though! Please read and fill in the online form below.

Parent View is an online facility launched by Ofsted in October 2011 that allows parents and carers to give their views about their child’s school at any time of the school year. The questionnaire is also the main mechanism for parents to give their views to inspectors about their child’s school at the time of a school inspection. If you are a registered parent or carer of a pupil at the school, you can tell us your views about the school by completing Ofsted’s online survey here.

E-Safety update

As ever, BCHS are always looking out for your child’s safety whilst online. Please find the latest guide for parents and children with regard to safe use of live streaming Apps.

As the guide says

“You can now broadcast from anywhere in the world, to anywhere in the world for free using the device in your pocket.”

So please read the guide found here, and keep your child safe

View your child’s information on your mobile phone or tablet, a great new way to keep in touch.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new service to make communications between school and home quicker, easier and more effective.

You will be able to view information about your child or children securely on your mobile phone or tablet using the Groupcall Xpressions app.

Once you are set up you will be able to see information such as:

  • Free messages sent by the school delivered to the app

  • Attendance and absence information

  • Attitude to learning (“ATL”) scores for each lesson.

  • Daily/Weekly timetable information

The app is completely free of charge to you and supports Apple iOS and Android devices (with Windows mobile to follow).

In order to use the app school must have your correct mobile number and email address on our school system. Forms are available from the school office to check and update your details or you can simply email them to the school. You’ll need to make sure you keep these details up to date in future to maintain access to the service.

You can download the app by searching for “Xpressions” in the App Store or on Google Play. Once the app is downloaded, simply follow the on screen instructions.

We hope that you take advantage of this new service, which has replaced our ParentsLive system. If you have any issues or need to know more please contact Mr O’Reilly here at school on aoreilly@birchwoodhigh.org
