We would like to hear your views about our school so we can share these with OFSTED
We are asking for your support so that we are aware of your views about our school. It will also help us to prepare for our next OFSTED visit which is due this academic year. Please read and fill in the online form below.
Parent View is an online facility launched by Ofsted in October 2011 that allows parents and carers to give their views about their child’s school at any time of the school year. The questionnaire is also the main mechanism for parents to give their views to inspectors about their child’s school at the time of a school inspection. If you are a registered parent or carer of a pupil at the school, you can tell us your views about the school by completing Ofsted’s online survey, Parent View, at: www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk
Birchwood College Open Evening
Thank you to all the visitors who came to our Birchwood College Open Evening last Thursday. Feedback was excellent, all visitors really enjoying the evening. A huge thanks to our present students who were on hand to speak to prospective students and parents/carers. Visitors were impressed at our confident, articulate learners who are obviously proud to be part of our College.
Also many thanks to our committed staff who have worked so hard to make the event a success.

Birchwood learners aiming high at the University and Degree Apprenticeship Fair
A group of 40 Year 11, 12 and 13 learners went on a visit to the Etihad Stadium on Thursday 5 Oct to find out more about post 18 options. We were given the chance to attend seminars on: applying to Oxford and Cambridge, Russell Group Universities, student finance and higher/degree apprenticeships. It was great to find out about the exciting opportunities available to us after college and to start planning for the future. What was interesting was the large number of companies offering degree apprenticeships e.g. IBM, PWC and Kier. On a degree apprenticeship the company pays for your degree whilst you earn a wage, this enables you to gain invaluable work experience, a degree and no student debt! The event was extremely busy with schools/colleges attending from all over the North West. We returned with lots of information as well as the usual freebies e.g. pens, sweets and even footballs – well we were at the Etihad after all, much to Mr Hamilton’s dismay!
Harvest Festival Assembly, donations for Warrington Foodbank

Once again, at our Harvest Festival Assembly at the end of this half term we will prepare food parcels in support of the Warrington Foodbank. Learners, students and staff have been asked to donate an item to support the foodbank. Form tutors will go through the list of items needed by the Foodbank. This can also be found on the link below. At present they have a good supply of pasta, soup, beans, breakfast cereals, teabags, sweet biscuits, and tinned sweetcorn and other pulses. so it would be helpful if learners could avoid these items. Urgent items include UHT milk, coffee, tinned desserts and meats. They are also desperate for toiletries and cleaning products.
We do hope that you will support this worthy cause.

GCSE Spanish Linguastars, extra support sessions
As part of The MFL department’s commitment to your child’s progress, intervention sessions have been put in place to ensure that our learners meet their target GCSE grades.
The department have arranged for extra support to be provided between 3 and 4 o’clock every Friday to help your child with either the completion of homework tasks or recapping the content of any lessons which they feel they may have found difficult.
Research shows that work outside of the classroom has a direct impact on how successful learners are in their final assessments. To book a place on these sessions ask your child to see Mr Farrell.
This Girl Can!
Birchwood Community High School are very proud to be supporting ‘This Girl Can’ which is a national pledge to try to encourage more girls to participate in sport. We want to offer year 10 girls the opportunity to try something new and have fun!
There will be one activity every half term for learners to sign up for and try. The first activity is Clubbercise on Wednesday 18 October from 3:15 – 4:15 in the Dance Studio. An external instructor who will provide the light, music and glow sticks will lead this.
The next session will be boxing in December; this will be based at a Warrington Boxing Club (transport will be provided). Other activities we are looking at for 2018 are a boot camp, cycling, rugby, martial arts, Ninja Warrior and an obstacle course.

Other School information:

View your child’s information on your mobile phone or tablet, a great new way to keep in touch.
We are pleased to announce the launch of a new service to make communications between school and home quicker, easier and more effective.
You will be able to view information about your child or children securely on your mobile phone or tablet using the Groupcall Xpressions app.
Once you are set up you will be able to see information such as:
Free messages sent by the school delivered to the app
Attendance and absence information
Attitude to learning (“ATL”) scores for each lesson.
Daily/Weekly timetable information
The app is completely free of charge to you and supports Apple iOS and Android devices (with Windows mobile to follow).
In order to use the app school must have your correct mobile number and email address on our school system. Forms are available from the school office to check and update your details or you can simply email them to the school. You’ll need to make sure you keep these details up to date in future to maintain access to the service.
You can download the app by searching for “Xpressions” in the App Store or on Google Play. Once the app is downloaded, simply follow the on screen instructions.
We hope that you take advantage of this new service, which has replaced our ParentsLive system. If you have any issues or need to know more please contact Mr O’Reilly here at school on aoreilly@birchwoodhigh.org

We have become aware though that there are groups of both learners and ex learners on site in the evenings. Please make your child aware that learners are only allowed on site after the school day, if they are part of an organised and booked group. Thank you for your co-operation.
School Nurse: Please note that the school nurse comes into school every Wednesday from 12.15- 1.30pm and is available in the BSR Mentoring Room if any learners or students have any health related issues they would like to discuss.
